Abstract
The author has been in charge of one English class per semester utelizing the 3D Interactive Education System (3d-ides) since the spring, semester 2000. This system enebles students to enter a 3-dimensional cyberspace under the disguise of an alter ego named an avatar. In this space, students have an online chat on a written basis with other people through the medium of the avatars, without knowing to whom they are having communication with. The system underwent a lot of minor improvements and a completely revised version was put in use at the outset of the academic year 2003. This innovated version has a dramatically different outlook from those of the older versions. It no longer depends on a special browser: it is plug-in software to be used with Internet Explorer. It is also full of new useful user-friendly functions. The present article is devoted to two things. One is to give overall understanding of the new version to the readers and the other is to reach some conclusion as to wha kind of tasks are desirable to enhance the motivation of the students to practice online English conversaton seriously. This paper is supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science under Grant No. 15520361.
