Abstract
OFDM-PON requires a lot of energy consumption even though it is one of candidate technologies for the future flexible and elastic optical access network. This paper describes the demonstration of an energy efficient OFDM-PON using the dynamic SNR management and adaptive modulation. By controlling the calculation precision and modulation format, the DSP energy consumption can be minimized while satisfying the BER requirements. We show that the calculation precision and modulation format can be optimized according to the optical received power, and achieve a 58.7% effective energy efficiency per bit in an FPGA-based receiver experimentally.
