Abstract

Liquid Crystalline Blue Phases (BPs) attract interest due to their great potential for advanced applications to next generation liquid crystal displays and tunable photonic liquid crystals. The problem of the narrow temperature range in BPs has been resolved by polymer-stabilized blue phases1). However, it is difficult to vary their photonic bands by an external field because of fixed BP lattice. Here we report a new method to broaden the stable temperature range of BPs without using polymer-stabilizing effect. In this study, we investigated a liquid crystllinity and elastic constants of the novel dendritic molecules. The temperature ranges in BPs with the novel dendritic molecules are also examined.
