Abstract
In this study, we analyzed the types, experiential bases, systemic structure, and characteristics of Japanese up-down orientational metaphors based on a large number of metaphorical expressions. The results showed two points: (1) Up and down are usually mapped to the following six target domains: quantity, time, order, property, status, and evaluation. (2) The systemic structure of Japanese up-down orientational metaphors has four characteristics: symmetry of mapping, coherence of mapping, variety of bases, and competition of bases.
