Abstract

A direct current water plasma torch was developed for waste treatment. Using the water plasma, we succeeded in decomposing liquid waste. The water plasma system was also applied for gaseous waste decomposition such as HFCs and PFCs. The hafnium embedded into a copper rod used as cathode material can overcome the erosion problems and achieve a long operating time in an oxidation atmosphere. The torch can generate stable 100%-water plasmas without an additional steam generator or gas supply system. The discharge characteristics of water plasma generation were examined by a synchronized arc image observation with voltage measurement. The dynamic behavior of the arc as a restrike mode has faster fluctuations than the decomposition process in the water plasma.
