Abstract

Every summer, Prof. Hirota and the author take approximately 50 Kyushu University students to Pembroke College, Cambridge University for a one-month Summer School. This program includes language classes, lecture courses, a video-project (the students make a short film), a field trip and formal dinners. Four student tutors take care of our students: they organize daily event like a dinner party, boating, a disco and soccer matches and also book hotels, theatres and trains for weekend nips. This hospitality, coupled with the profound academic and historical atmosphere of the college, urges the students into exceptionally high concentration on their work. Many of them report that greatimprovement can be observed in their English skills and that this summer school would definitely be the mest enriching experience of their whole lives. The present paper effers a brief description and evaluation of the program, recruiting process, advance preparations, the beneficial aspects of the program and so forth.
