Abstract

17α,20β-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α,20β-DP), also known as a maturation-inducing hormone (MIH), is required for the meiotic maturation of oocytes and sperm maturation in teleost fish. It is produced in the ovarian follicle from the precursor, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, by the enzyme 20β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. The 17α,20β-DP acts via its receptor, 17α,20β-DPR, on the plasma membrane of oocytes. It also has a nuclear receptor-mediated action in the testis of the Japanese eel.
