Abstract
Fluorinated nematic liquid crystals (LCs) are used commonly as TFT-LC display materials because they show a low viscosity, a high voltage holding ratio and a high responsivity. Binaphthyl derivatives are well known as chiral dopants which show a large helical twisting power (HTP). In this study, we aim at the development of chiral dopants with a large HTP and a high solubility in the fluorinated nematic LC and designed novel fluorinated binaphthyl chiral dopants. In addition, we investigated properties of blue phases induced by adding the chiral dopant to the fluorinated nematic LC.
