A study on earthquake responses of steel tower with additional damping

Abstract

The Ji-Ji Earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 occurred at central part of Taiwan on September 21st 1999. Many steel towers had heavy damages. This paper deals with the analysis of earthquake responses of 345kV steel tower to investigate the cause and the seismic reinforcing of the steel tower by additional damping using FEM. From the dynamic response analysis, the possibility of damage of the steel tower by vibration was suggested. The effect of additional damping to steel tower was confirmed.
