A study on the statistical prediction of the freak wave generation in the ocean

Abstract

For the ship design, abnormal waves which appear once while twenty or thirty years are treated as a critical design condition. One of the abnormal waves is named 'Freak wave'. This paper presents a method to estimate the freak wave occurrence probability. The authors suggest that wave height difference between two successive waves should be used as random variables. And, using two time scales (long term and short term) which has been suggested by Athanassoulis (1992), the freak wave occurrence probability in the long term is calculated. And, the freak wave occurrence probability in arbitrary sea area can be estimated.
