Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reactivities of gas oil and a refractory sulfur species, 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT), in decane were examined over a mechanical mixture of Ni loaded Y-zeolite and CoMo/Al2O3 (mixed catalyst). The mixed catalyst exhibited higher activity for desulfurization of alkyldibenzothiophenes in gas oil than that of CoMo/Al2O3 alone. Desulfurization reactivity of 4,6-DMDBT was doubled by methyl migration from 4-position to 3-position in the substance to moderate the steric hindrance of the methyl groups as revealed in two-stage desulfurization reaction in which Ni-HY was used in the first stage and CoMo/Al2O3 in the second stage.
