Analytical study on behavior of existing suspension bridge during large-scale earthquake

Abstract

The subject bridge was built over 40 years ago. It was not designed seismically to withstand level 2 earthquake motion having low probability of occurrence during its period of service and large seismic intensity. Since the side spans of the subject bridge were less than 200 m and were relatively short-period structures, it became clear that inertial forces perpendicular to the bridge axis might increase and at the same time the main trusses and lateral bracing including stiffening girders or floor trusses, and wind tongue systems, abutment bearings, etc., might get damaged.
