Anionic polymerization of 4-(1-Adamantyl)styrene

Abstract

Two styrene derivatives p-substituted with adamantyl groups, 4-(1-adamantyl)styrene (1) and 3-(4-vinylphenyl)-1,1'-biadamantane (2), were polymerized with lithium naphthalenide or sec-butyllithium in THF at -78°C. Random copolymerization of 1 and styrene proceeded quantitatively to afford the polymers having the predicted molecular weights and the narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≦ 1.03). Tgs of the resulting poly(l-co-styrene) could be controlled from 91 to 232°C by changing the feed molar ratio of 1 and styrene.
