In the present container yard, rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs) are widely used to handle container boxes. Terminal operators have strongly requested automatic RTG, so RTG travels automatically along the straight magnetic guideline by automatic steering control. This paper proposes a new approach in order to improve the automatic steering control system. The paper discusses the newly developed simulator using the structure model, and the design method of optimum regulator including low-pass filter. The effectiveness of the new control method is evaluated through experimental results at the container yard.
