Bluetooth Based Smart Plug Design for Energy Monitoring in Household Applications

Abstract

This paper represents a complete design of an application executed by a smartphone for controlling and monitoring domestic products where the smart plug is used as a major device. Unlike certain communication protocols, without any requirements for extra gateways, the low-energy Bluetooth permits monitoring electronic appliances remotely through a smartphone. Here, a device built with the Arduino UNO module is designed to evaluate energy consumption and directly regulate household electrical appliances. Moreover, this designed system allows the consumer to monitor several parameters such as power consumption, auto-shutdown, and power control. Accordingly, using Bluetooth wireless technology and smartphone or tablet, different parameters of electrical devices such as RMS current, RMS voltage, power factor, and RMS power consumption could be observed and measured successfully.
