Abstract

Case history on the penetration of suction foundation is demonstrated in the paper. A procedure to estimate the lower critical suction for the penetration of foundation as well as the upper critical suction against boiling or heaving is presented. Field data on the suction and settlement collected at Kobe Port, the seabed of which were composed of clayey soil, and obtained at Kashima Port, the seabed of which were consisted of sandy soil, were respectively compared with theoretical results. The comparisons between field data and analytical results showed that the proposed procedure could be applied successfully to prospect the suction for the penetration of foundation, provided that the input data for the analysis were appropriately determined.
