Change in magnetic microstructure near the martensitic transformation in a Ni-Fe-Ga alloy

Abstract

Temperature dependence of the magnetic domain structure in the parent phase of the Ni51Fe22Ga27 alloy-a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy-was intensively studied by electron holography and Lorentz microscopy. The magnetic flux pattern in the parent phase changes dramatically as the temperature approaches Ms. Interestingly, the flux pattern developed in the parent phase appears to be inherited by the martensitic phase. Energy-filtered electron diffraction studies indicate that the change in the magnetic flux partem is triggered by a lattice anomaly, which appears to produce a macroscopic strain field in the parent phase.
