Characteristics of ocean waves around Japan based on WAM wave hindcasting data

Abstract

The ocean waves around Japan for eight years were hindcasted by the third generation wave model, WAM, using the ECMWF wind data. The wave characteristics were estimated on the basis of those hindcasted wave data and the observed wave data of the NOWPHAS (Nationwide Ocean Wave observation network for Ports and HArborS) in Japan. The accuracy of the hindcasted wave data and their applicability for investigating long term wave statistics were also discussed.
