Abstract

In this study, the pyridine insoluble fractions in mesophase pitches were solubilized by Diels-Alder reactions for their detail characterizations. The chemical structures of insoluble fractions in mesophase pitches were illustrated through the solubilization of the fractions using Diels-Alder reaction with maleic anhydride. The PMP-PI consists of much condensed structures with a higher molecular weight to be connected together through methylene and/or phenyl-phenyl bonds. The structure also involves some cata-condensed structures which are the reactive sites for the Diels-Alder reaction.
