Characterization of S-N curve in gigacycle fatigue

Abstract

To characterize the S-N curve form in gigacycle fatigue, five high strength low alloy steels with tensile strengths from 1500 MPa to 1800MPa were tested at very high numbers of cycles through piezoelectric fatigue test at 20 KHz. A significant change in the slope of S-N curve was observed, accompanying the transition from surface to subsurface crack initiation. The S-N diagram on these steels reveales a two-stepwise shape, and the S-N curve tends to drop down again after 107 or 108 cycles. The specimens continue to fail over 107 stress cycles. It should be significant to realize the risk of obtaining the fatigue limit at 107 cycles.
