Clinical outcome of radical prostatectomy and lymph node dissection in retropubic, laparoscopic, and robotic prostatectomy

Abstract

Radical prostatectomy presents several difficulties in that it requires the precise understanding of anatomy and the acquisition of complex techniques due to the necessity of performing function-sparing surgery within a limited field of pelvic space. Robot-assisted surgery, which is becoming the standard treatment for prostatic cancer, has attracted much attention since it not only results in an improved surgical outcome, but it also facilitates the acquisition of complex surgical techniques. As robot-assisted radical prostatectomy becomes widely utilized in Japan, an evaluation of clinical outcome in initial cases is necessary in order to confirm its safety and efficacy. For these reasons, we analyzed the clinical outcome of radical prostatectomy and lymph node dissection in Kyushu University Hospital and we compared the results following open, laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery.
