Abstract

An 800 A current lead has been developed for a 14 T hybrid split solenoid magnet. The current lead has a compact co-axial structure which consists of a copper rod and tube. The cooling gas flows through the circular gap between the two conductors. This common cooling channel simplifies the control of the cooling gas flow. A general design chart was used to optimize the current lead. Experimental results showed good operational performance at 800 A. The heat flow from the cold ends and the pressure drop of the cooling gas at 800 A were less than 1.25 mW A-1 and 1 × 104 Pa, respectively.
