Abstract
This paper analyzed the energy efficiency of two commonly used cooling systems (including the air-cooled type and the water-cooled type) in data centers according the climatic characteristics of different climate zones based on the energy consumption measuring results of a medium size data center. The results revealed the influence of the seasonal and regional climate differences on the performance of the data center cooling systems and also showed the application advantages of the air-cooled and water-cooled systems. An operation test on a free cooling system combining the heat pipe cycle and the vapor compression cycle was conducted. The results concluded the available time and energy saving potential of the combined system in different climate zones, which can be used in the site selection of data centers and the optimization of the data center cooling systems.
