Demonstration of wide throttling range ion engines

Abstract

For demonstration of a wide range throttling ion engine by changing the ion beam extraction duty cycle, time history of ion beam current and neutralizer current were measured using 100 N class miniature ion engine. The ion beam current synchronized with the accel. grid voltage, with repetition frequency of 1 kHz, duty cycle of 0.5. The time integrated emission current from field emission cathode and the time integrated ion beam current are balanced; the neutralization of a wide throttling range ion engine system was successfully demonstrated.
