Abstract
The effect of a mirror field on field reconnection in an FRC formation stage has been experimentally investigated. Reconnection is promoted when the mirror-field intensity is above a critical value at which the azimuthal electron drift velocity exceeds the ion sound velocity. This implies that the generation of some instabilities is important for the reconnection.
