Abstract

This paper presents preliminary results of geophysical investigations carried out on recent landslide dams in the Kii Peninsula, Japan with purpose of studying internal structures of the landslide dams in relation to groundwater flow which may cause potential failure by piping. Model tests were also conducted to confirm the method of monitoring groundwater flowthrough the dams and propose premonitory indices that can be used to predict major failure by piping. Results obtained from microtremor chain array survey (MCAS) shows that the internal characteristics of the landslide dams are related to the density and material compositions of the blockages. Also, results obtained from model tests confirmed that self-potential measurement is effective in monitoring groundwater flow while decrease in groundwater level and increasein turbidity can be used as premonitory indices for predicting landslide dam failure by piping. .
