Detection and analyses of hydrometeor properties from EarthCARE data

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Kyushu University is developing the EarthCARE level 2 algorithms for hydrometeor products. The hydrometeor products will be distributed from JAXA. The algorithms developed based on CloudSat/CALIPSO data with modification will be used for the EarthCARE mission. The structure of the algorithms and improvements required to reduce existing uncertainties for the microphysics by active sensors especially at optically thick regions are discussed in the paper. One of the issues discussed are the incorporation of distribution of ice particle orientations in the algorithm, which is tested with CloudSat/CALIPSO data before and after change in lidar tilt angle.
