Abstract

Pt nanoparticles have been encapsulated into nano-channels of mesoporous carbon (MC), in order to suppress the mobility of Pt particles and then increase the durability. For further enhancing IV performance, especially in the high current density region, addition of carbon nanofiber (CNF) to the cathode catalyst layers was explored, and an optimal condition was evaluated. As a result, MEA with 10 wt.% CNF addition showed the highest IV performance even though porosity itself was better for 20 wt.% CNF addition. Therefore, thickness is another important factor in addition to porosity, especially in terms of Pt active sites per unit thickness.
