Abstract

The as-quenched and as-aged microstructures of the 6000 series aluminum alloys, both commercial and Mn-modified test alloys were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The replacement of Cr by Mn was made in an attempt to avoid the possible unfavorable effects of Cr to the environment. The size and distribution of the dispersoids were determined on the electron micrographs by the use of the image processor. A comparable size and distribution of dispersoids were observed between the commercial 6061 alloy and the modified 6061 alloys containing 0.2 - 0.4%Mn with negligible Cr content. The spatial distribution of the dispersoids was successfully determined by TEM stereoscopy of thicker foils, using a high voltage (1000kV) electron microscope.
