Abstract

Discusses some new dynamical models of earthquakes and crack propagation. For the earthquake model, it is pointed out that the instability caused by a velocity weakening friction law gives the system chaotic time development and a scaling behavior even when the system is totally uniform and deterministic. For the model of crack propagation, it is demonstrated that dissipation can play an important role in the crack propagation by solving the model analytically. -from Authors
