Effect of carbon source on formation of vapor-grown carbon fiber

Abstract

Vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF) is formed on the surface of activated carbon pellets in the presence of sulfur and iron catalyst particles. Methane, benzene, and l-methylnaphthalene are satisfactory as the carbon source, but fluoranthene or pyrene inhibits the growth of VGCF by covering catalyst particles with coke. Hydrotreatment over an Ni-Mo Al2O3 catalyst prior to the reaction, however, makes the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons feasible as the carbon source of VGCF.
