Abstract

The effects of impurities, especially CO2, and exposure to air on the hydrogen absorbing behaviour of Mg-5wt.%Ni, Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg2Ni are studied. Treatment with pure N2 and CO2 at room temperature and hydrogenation using H2N2 and H2-CH4 mixtures does not affect the reactivity of Mg2Ni. When hydrogen with 1% CO2 is used for hydriding Mg2Ni and Mg-5wt.%Ni in a batch type reactor, the hydrogen capacity of Mg2Ni is not changed while hydrogen is not fully desorbed from Mg-5wt.%Ni. In the case of Mg-5wt.%Ni H2O formed from CO2 and H2 is considered to hinder desorption of hydrogen from the hydride. Exposure of hydrided and dehydrided samples to the air shows a slight effect on hydrogen capacity of those alloys.
