Abstract

The effect of water vapor on the microstructure and superconducting properties of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors is investigated using polycrystalline YBa2Cu3Oxand Bi1.85Pb0.35Sr1.90Ca2.05CU3.05Oy. The superconductors are sintered in atmospheres of H2O-O2and H2O-O2-Ar, respectively, instead of O2. Crystal growth, especially that around grain boundaries, is greatly enhanced by water-vapor processing. As a result, the transport critical current density Jcis considerably enhanced.
