N2 - The mechanical properties of the base plate and toughness of the weld joint were studied. For Nb free steels, the tensile strength and lower yield point was lower for decreasing C content. For Nb steels, LYP increased and TS was lowered slightly for decreasing C content. The fracture appearance transition temperature of 0. 01%C-0. 03%Nb steel was minus 150 degree C when normalized and minus 130 degree C when quenched and tempered. Toughness was improved by decreasing the C content. Nb had no effect.
