Effects of oxygen enrichment on pulsed flame jet ignition

Abstract

Pulsed Flame Jet (PFJ) ignition, which is an injection of active radicals produced in a small cavity into a combustion chamber, is an effective ignition method for lean fuel/air mixtures. In this study, the effects of oxygen enrichment in the PFJ igniter on the combustion characteristics in the combustion chamber were experimentally examined using methane as a fuel. Pressure measurement and OH measurement by Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) were performed in the combustion chamber. Through them, it was confirmed that larger oxygen fraction and larger equivalence ratio in the PFJ igniter lead to intenser enhancement of the combustion in the combustion chamber.
