Abstract

We introduce an authoring tool for making language teaching materials in EPUB format. In this paper, we developed the system for Japanese language, but our system can be adapted to other languages as well. Our EPUB authoring tool supports teachers for making materials easily, providing functions such as generating supplemental katakana beside each kanji automatically and embedding responsive multiple-choice questions. Experimental results show that our tool can dramatically decrease the time for making language teaching materials. As an application, by implementing our system as a web-proxy, users can browse Japanese web documents with automatically generated supplemental katakana characters (or romanized spellings) beside each difficult kanji character.
