Evaluation of interfacial structure in blends of polypropylene and elastomer by scanning force mircroscopy

Abstract

Flat cross-sections of (polypropylene/elastomer) blends were prepared by ultamicrotoming at 150 K. Then, scanning force microscopy (SFM) was applied to each cross-section to evaluate the interfacial thickness between the two phases in the blend. For this purpose, a viscoelastic mode was superior to a conventional topographic mode. The results obtained well reflected the solubility between the two components. Finally, transmission electron microscopy was applied to the sample. The TEM observations supported what was suggested on the basis of SFM results.
