Examination of arteries and veins in rat incisor pulp by TEM of freeze-fracture replicas

Abstract

The arteries and veins in rat incisor pulp were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of freeze-fracture replicas. The endothelial junction of the central arteries was composed of tight junctions comprising 2 to 5 or 6 strands with many intercalated gap junctions. The endothelial junction of the small arterioles displayed tight junctions comprising 7 to 10 strands but no gap junctions were found in it. The endothelial junction of the central veins was composed of linear creases only, whereas that of the small venules was composed of tight junctions and linear creases.
