N2 - Optical generation of coherent hypersonic waves are first demonstrated at metal/liquid interfaces using the transient reflecting grating technique. Two important acoustic modes are identified: One is the Scholte (or pseudo-Stoneley) mode localized at the interfaces, and its velocity relates to the liquid elasticity within some hundreds of nanometers from the interface; and the other is a longitudinal acoustic mode propagating parallel to the interfaces in the liquids, and its intensity relates to heat conduction from the solid to the liquid.
