Abstract

We adopted superconducting parallel conductors to build a 500 kVA transformer cooled by LN2. The strands in the parallel conductors are transposed for low ac loss. We have been studying the additional ac loss in parallel conductors, which is induced by the deviation of the transposition points from the optimum ones. It is proportional to the deviation length and the square of the field amplitude, and has Debye-type frequency dependence. However we have not taken into account the effect of the diamagnetic field in the theoretical expressions. It relates with the aspect ratio of a parallel conductor. Hence, in this paper, we investigated the dependence of the additional ac loss on the distance between the strands in a two-strand parallel conductor experimentally.
