N2 - Salinity is an ever-present hazard in irrigation agriculture. In order to conduct experiments on the control of salinity and sodicity in surface-irrigated fields, an experimental field was established at Pingbu village (Baiyin, Gansu, China) located in an alluvial valley of the Yellow River in September 2007. The background to and the objectives and methodology of the experiments are described, and the natural condition of the study area and the fundamental knowledge and information on this subject are summarized.
