In this work a portable electrochemical system for the detection of 2,3-dimethyldinitrobutane (DMNB) as an explosive taggant was developed using corundum based integrated electrochemical chips. The integrated electrochemical chips were inserted into a flow cell and connected to a handheld potentiostat for electrochemical measurements. Different concentrations (0.5, 5, 25 and 50 ppm) of the DMNB compound dissolved in supporting electrolyte (KC1100 mM) were pumped into the measurement cell and two voltammetric measurements, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), were conducted. The reduction peak of the nitro group (NO2) was observed at ca. -0.9 V and the anodic current change showed a linear dependence on DMNB concentration.
