    Abstract

A numerical approach to analyze optical waveguides is discussed using Fourier series expansion method combined with the Chew's perfectly matched layer (PML) scheme. Since the fields inside the PML are described in term of a single complex- coordinate-stretching parameter, the formulation of problems and the matrix equation to be solved become much simpler compared with those based on the Berenger's PML model. The numerical example for an optical waveguide -diffraction problem demonstrates that the convergence of solutions is significantly improved by using the present approach.
