Frictional characteristics of tire-derived granular materials

Abstract

Conventional direct shear testing apparatus cannot guarantee the proper evaluation of the shear characteristics of large-sized particulate materials such as tire chips and tire shreds. In this research, a new medium-size shear box was developed to test such large-sized particulate materials. A series of direct shear tests were performed on sand, tire chips and tire chips-sand-structure interfaces using the developed testing apparatus. The frictional characteristics of the interfaces are evaluated and the characteristics features are made clear.
