Fuel cells using hydrogen as the fuel are able to operate with high efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet exhaust gas (SOx, NOx and PM) regulations. Therefore, the application of marine fuel cells represents a potentially effective means of reducing the environmental impact and solving fossil fuel shortage problems of marine vessels. The Basic Energy Plan released by the Japanese government in 2014 states that hydrogen is an important energy source and that hydrogen energy should be considered for a wide variety of applications, including residences, automobiles, and marine vessels.
