The contribution analyses the use of IoT technologies in Japanese automotive companies. Based on seven company case studies, a specific mode of the introduction of advanced technologies in identified, namely gemba digitalisation. Gemba digitalisation is characterised by the shop floor orientation of digitalisation activities, its practical low cost approach, its respect for the practical knowledge of production workers and its support for the Gemba orientation deeply embedded in the company culture of many Japanese companies.
