N2 - To the Editor: Ellman and Ball were the first to report that rheumatoid arthritis and lung fibrosis occurred concomitantly.1 Roentgenographically, 5 percent of patients with rheumatoid arthritis had signs of lung fibrosis.2 Silicosis is a lung fibrosis caused by prolonged inhalation of silica dusts, and 3.7 percent of these patients have symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.3 It has also been reported that silicosis developed more frequently in miners with rheumatoid arthritis than in those without rheumatoid arthritis, after exposure to silica.4 We have already reported that there is a statistical association with the HLA specificities Bw54, DR4, and DRw53 in Japanese.
