Abstract

Segmented poly(urethaneureas) (SPUU) were synthesized from polyether diols having various surface free energy as soft segments, with molecular weights varying from 200 to 4,000. The hard segment of SPUU was composed of ethylene diamine and 4,4 prime -diphenylmethane diisocyanate. Characterizations of SPUU were performed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), dynamic viscoelastic, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), and water content measurements. The blood compatibility of SPUU was evaluated from the number of adhered and deformed platelets on the film surfaces of SPUU. The number of adhered and deformed platelets on the film surface of SPUU shows a minimum at a specific molecular weight of polyether, depending on the surface free energy of polyether. It was concluded from the structural analysis and the morphological observation of adhered platelets that the blood compatibility of SPUU was affected mainly by domain size, the degree of microphase separation, and surface free energy of each segment.
