Improvement of SN ratio by time-of-scattering measurement in laser 2-focus velocimeter

Abstract

A new method for noise reduction is proposed for the laser 2-focus velocimeter (L2F) system. In addition to the measurement of the time-of-flight of a particle passed between two foci, as is usual in the conventional L2F, the time-of-scattering of the particle was measured. The two-dimensional probability distribution of velocity and time-of-scattering was taken into consideration in order to discriminate a noise from the signal. The criterion for noise reduction was derived from the concept that the time-of-scattering is proportional to the time-of-flight for the finite focus size. This relationship was examined in the experimental data which include noise caused by different particles or the scattered light on the wall. As the results, the conditional sampling procedure considering the relationship between the scattering time and the velocity was found to be useful and effective for removing noise.
