Abstract
Carbonaceous mesophase pitches were prepared from two petroleum pitches by assuring homogeneous heating under vacuum and stirring. The mesophase pitches were characterized in terms of their solubilities, optical anisotropy, softening temperature and the thermal stability to correlate to their structural characteristics. Among the characteristics, their contents of naphthenic groups which inherited their starting pitches appear to be a key factor controlling their properties.
